Note: This package contains two copies of the Trash Control Panel. You only need to install one of them. See the installation instructions below for details. Two copies were provided so that ALL Macintosh owners could have “skinny”, native versions of the control panel which contain only the fast, native code needed for their particular machine type (68k Mac or Power Mac).
Introduction
Trash Control is a System 7 control panel that automatically empties your trash. You can set the trash to empty at startup or empty on a particular day of the week, such as "Monday". You will no longer have to manually choose "Empty Trash…" from the Finder's™ Special menu.
Trash Control comes native for both Power Mac owners and non-Power Mac owners (68k Macs). The 68k version will work on either machine, although it runs in emulation mode on a Power Mac. Do not use the Power Mac version on a 68k Macintosh, because it will not run.
Installation
The Trash Control Panel, as the name suggests, belongs in the Control Panels folder, which is located inside the System Folder on your startup disk. The Trash Control Panel will not be able to empty the trash if it is not placed in the Control Panels folder.
• Power Mac Owners:
Drag the file “TrashControlPPC” to your system folder. The Finder will automatically place the file in the Control Panels folder for you. Open the control panels folder and rename the file from “TrashControlPPC” to “TrashControl”. This last step is optional, you can name the program anything you like.
• 68k Mac Owners:
Drag the file “TrashControl68k” to your system folder. The Finder will automatically place the file in the Control Panels folder for you. Open the control panels folder and rename the file from “TrashControl68k” to “TrashControl”. This last step is optional, you can name the program anything you like.
That's it.
Using the Program
After installation, double-click the Trash Control icon or choose “Trash Control” from the Control Panels menu in the Apple () menu. The Trash Control panel window will open.
Note: If the Trash Control Panel window does not open and you are using a 68k Mac (not a Power Mac), you may have installed the Power Mac version by mistake. Please refer to the installation instructions and be sure that you have the 68k version of the Trash Control installed. The version (68k or PowerPC) is shown on the copyright line at the bottom right of the Trash Control Panel window.
The Trash Control Panel looks like this:
The following options are available:
• “Empty trash at startup” will cause the trash to be emptied during system startup once per day.
• “Never empty trash” will effectively turn off the trash control panel. It will not empty the trash, therefore, you must empty the trash yourself using the Finder, just like when Trash Control is not installed.
• “Empty trash on [Monday]” will cause the trash to be emptied at system startup time once on the day chosen. If you do not turn on your computer on the day selected, the trash control panel will empty the trash the next time you startup the computer. The Trash Control Panel empties the trash on the day selected -or- it empties the trash if more than 7 days have elapsed since the last time it emptied the trash. This has a side effect in that the very first time you install the Trash Control Panel, the program will think more than 7 days has elapsed since the last time it emptied the trash (since it has never yet emptied it), therefore, even with this third option selected, the trash will empty the first time you startup the computer after you intitially install the control panel. After this, the control panel will behave as expected.
Note: If the file “TrashControl Prefs” (preferences file) is removed from the “Preferences” folder, the Trash Control Panel will exhibit this same behavior, i.e., it will act like it was just installed.
For example, suppose you have the trash set to empty on Mondays. You startup your computer this Monday and the trash is emptied. If you startup your computer again that same monday, the trash will be left alone. The trash control panel will only empty the trash once in any given day. Suppose a week and a day goes by (it's now Tuesday) and you turn on your computer. The trash will be emptied since you “missed” the Monday, i.e., it is more than 7 days since the last time the trash was emptied.
Please note that the Trash Control Panel will never empty the trash if you select the “Never empty trash” item.
